20-40 GHz Spatium SSPA Platform
25 Watt Ka Band SatCom SSPA
Problem
A SatCom system OEM attempted to develop a Ka-Band block up-converter requiring 25 watts P1dB over the full 29 GHz to 31 GHz band. The customer's design was based on combining 8 off-the-shelf GaAs MMICs using a conventional corporate combiner, and then combining those two modules with a waveguide combiner for a total of 16 MMICs. Unable to meet their RF power requirements because of excessive combining losses, they turned to CAP Wireless' Spatium technology.
Solution
Using the same number and model of GaAs MMIC chips as the OEM, CAP incorporated them into its 20-40 GHz Spatium platform. As a result, CAP was able to supply a completed unit that exceeded the customer's specifications for power output, efficiency, distortion and bandwidth. For more information on this product refer to model number KA01900.
"We see Spatium as a way to leverage higher numbers of combined MMIC devices than we can achieve with [in-house] SSPA combining techniques, which will allow us to supplant TWTAs for higher power applications."
