A defense OEM required a solid state solution to replace Ka Band traveling wave tube amplifiers in a mission critical electronic countermeasure application. The amplifier had to to meet stringent airborne qualifications, and operate in an extreme, dynamic environment. Exceptional reliability, fault tolerant operation, and the ability to fit within a unique compact and lightweight form factor were mandatory.
CAP incorporated its 20-40 GHz Spatium platform, a driver amplifier and bias/control circuit in a single, compact and environmentally sealed cylindrical package. By combining 16 commercial off the shelf MMIC amplifiers, CAP achieved 50 watts of Ka Band power. This solution not only eliminated the need for a high voltage power supply, it also resulted in more than 10X improvement in reliability compared with the TWTA implementation.
